North Expands Smart Glasses Expertise with Acquisition of Intel’s Smart Glasses Technology Portfolio
December 17 - Waterloo, Ontario: Today, North, the makers of Focals, announced the ac- quisition of Intel’s smart glasses technology portfolio. This deal includes the sale of intellec- tual property and assets related to Intel’s “Superlight” consumer augmented reality glasses project. North will use these assets to accelerate an already aggressive R&D program, ad- vanced manufacturing operation and product roadmap. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
Of note, this deal includes the acquisition of numerous patents. North has made building a robust IP portfolio a key part of its strategy from day-one. With this acquisition, North will have nearly 650 patents and patent applications by the end of the year, making the company the holder of one of the most robust smart glasses portfolios in the world.

This deal comes on the heels of the release of North’s new product, Focals. Using Focals, you can see and respond to texts, get turn-by-turn directions, check the weather, request an Uber, talk to Amazon Alexa and more — seamlessly and immediately. Each pair is custom-made to the exact specifications of the wearer using our proprietary in-store 3D sizing technology.
